PD The Science of Reading, Part 3: What In-Service Teachers Need to Know (Independent Study)
#: 2324-027    ID:    Section:
Description:

Many reading educators have focused on and mastered teaching the five components of reading, first published in the National Reading Panel Report in 2000. These skills include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. Although proficiency of these skills is essential, this edWebinar emphasizes the need for teachers to possess a deeper understanding of language structures that include phonology, orthography, syntax (the structure of sentences), morphemes, semantics (word and phrase meaning), and the organization of spoken and written discourse. This session places an additional emphasis on morphological awareness and its contribution to a student’s literacy development.

Viewers learn:

  • How to build word curiosity and a love for words by zeroing in on the components of our language and why these components are essential for the English learner

  • What instruction looks like in the early grades

  • What is important to focus on in the intermediate grades

  • Why morphological awareness is important and how to integrate it into daily routines

This recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-8 teachers, literacy specialists, reading teachers, reading interventionists, and school and district leaders.
